Bulldogs History and Background
This breed was bred by crossing the pug with the mastiff which was mainly used for entertainment in bull baiting sport during the middle age until the practice was outlawed by the parliament from 1200 to 1800s. It was in 1835, they started a new life when some people tried to preserve them though their popularity was getting dim and they were close to extinction.
Those people tried to create this breed with a better personality than they used to be which is more affectionate, docile and nice. Though they became gentler yet they were still ferocious when they were needed to protect their family. And now, this dog is one of the most loved and popular breeds which can be found in many households. They also become the most used mascot of many institutions.
Bulldogs Physical Characteristics
Indeed, this dog’s outer look is pretty ugly or rather scary. The wrinkles and folds and falling face make them look pretty bizarre. Moreover, they have a very big body which is quite thick and extremely heavy. Their shoulders are wide and their heads are quite large. They got a very muscular and broad jaw while their nose is pretty scrunched and the face makes them have a slight difficulty to breathe. As for the coat, it is quite fine with nice textures and glossy look. You may find them in shades of red, white, yellow or a combination of them.
Bulldogs Personality and Temperament
Bulldogs have been portrayed to be very ruthless and wild. But in reality, this dog is pretty calm and nice. In fact, they can be very quiet and reserved. But they do have some characters to recommend them like their strong sense of devotion, patience, affection, and loyalty. They are also very obedient and will do anything to please you, though they can be stubborn at times. Moreover, they get along with children well as well as to strangers. In totality, this dog is a fun loving breed which makes a great pet and companion.
This dog drools a lot, which can be quite troublesome that is why you need to clean their mouth well by brushing their teeth daily. They got a short coat which hardly needs any care at all but the problem is the folds which should be well cleaned and wiped regularly because dirt can build up there which can cause infection and other skin problem. They enjoy some active activities, but cannot deal with too much or too much of it. They cannot stand too much heat so you should apply sunscreen lotion on them if you take them out during hot weather.
The Bulldogs face structure and body characteristics like their nose, skin, and teeth can cause them several health problems. Normally, they will live for about 8 and 12 years averagely. In Bulldogs, you should be aware of some of these illnesses such as:
- Breathing problems can be caused by the narrow nostrils that got blocked by the skin of their palate. This especially will happen when the weather is too hot or when they are overheated inside the car. They breathe very hard which can cause throat irritation and this will lead to respiratory problems.
- Some other major health problems are keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), ventricular septal defect, canine hip dysplasia (CHD), shoulder luxation, internalized tail, stenotic nares, and elongated soft palate. Moreover, there is urethral prolapse or vaginal hyperplasia.
- And for the minor problems, they are susceptible to entropion, cherry eye, elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, distichiasis, ectropion, and demodicosis.
