Another popular large breed is the amazing Rottweiler. This dog knows as police and military dogs. They have strength, agility and quickness recommend them. It was first developed in Germany and now, is considered one of the most powerful breeds.
Rottweiler History and Background
As far as their origin is concerned, actually there is not an exact fact on this but there are many experts that suggested that the breed is related to drover dogs of ancient Rome. Originally, the Rottweiler was used as a herder for their great ability to herd cattle, especially during Roman Empire’s army long marches. They were taken to the Alps which is known now Germany and worked there as cattle driving until the mid-19th century, it was banned and they were replaced by the donkey. After this they became useless and the number decreased which almost resulted in extinction which was prevented by some standing clubs that made the first standard and also promoted them as police dogs. In 1931, this breed got their due and popularity as they were introduced to the US folks and got recognition from the American Kennel Club.
Rottweiler Physical Characteristics
Rottweiler dog is famous for being intimidating since the reputation of them is viciously and wild. Rightly so, since as far as their physical features they have made them look rather scary yet elegant. Their body is pretty long and the body is robust. You will always find them in black color coat, but with a variety of marking shades from rust to mahogany on the cheeks, muzzle, and legs and above the eyes. The texture of the straight haired coat is pretty rough and coarse and it is thick.
Rottweiler Personality and Temperament
Since this dog is about endurance, alertness, and power, you may expect them to be fearless and confident. The Rottweiler dog breed is very loyal thus make them great guard and protector. When they meet strangers they can become reserved. They will be able to sense danger and will be likely to attack when they feel their family is threatened. So, when they are trained well, they will be a great pet.
The Rottweiler dog is very active and they will demand a great amount of exercise to channel their overwhelming energy. Take them for it every day. It can be games also so their mental and physical needs can be fulfilled. They are known to be quite stubborn and can be very aggressive that is why you need to take them to obedience lessons and involve them to society. The Rottweiler dog can bear coldness but cannot deal with the heat. For the coat, you just need to occasionally brush it.
You must be aware that though the Rottweiler’s lifespan is around 8 to 11 years, they are still prone to some health problems that may shorten their life. Some of the major illnesses they are susceptible to include hip dysplasia (CHD), osteosarcoma, elbow dysplasia, sub-aortic stenosis (SAS) and gastric torsion. And for the minor ones, you may see cases like allergies, hypothyroidism, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), ectropion, cataract, seizures, von Willebrand’s disease (vWD), entropion, and panosteitis. In order to prevent them, you need to take them for hip, eye, elbow, and cardiac exams.
